Hardware R&D and product development

Your hardware R&D team, without hiring one.

From a one-page idea to a tested board and the files to manufacture it. Each phase is quoted separately, and you choose how far the project goes.

Who this is for

You have a product idea and no hardware team.

Maybe you are a software or mechanical company adding electronics, or a founder with a concept and no one to prove it works. You need someone to say what is feasible, build something that works on a bench and carry it to a design a factory can build, without a full-time hire.

What you get

A project in phases, each with something to hold.

  • Feasibility report with risks and a BOM estimate Requirements, risks and a first parts estimate, so the go or no-go is decided on facts.
  • Proof-of-concept hardware and test results Hardware that proves the hard part works, with test results you can look at.
  • Prototype iterations Boards revised from what testing shows, each iteration built and tested here.
  • Production hand-off package The files listed in your quote to take the design into manufacturing, or we can manufacture it here.
  • Architecture and part selection The chip family that fits (STM32, ESP32, Nordic nRF, Microchip, TI, and Arduino-compatible) and the connectivity your product needs (UART, RS-232, RS-485, I²C, SPI, CAN, LIN, USB, Ethernet, BLE, Wi‑Fi, and sub-GHz/2.4 GHz radio), chosen with parts you can actually buy.
  • A pilot run A pilot run assembled and tested on our own line, so you see how the design behaves when it is built, not only drawn.
How it works

Four phases, each scoped on its own.

  1. 01 Describe the idea Tell us what the product does, who it is for and what a successful first unit looks like, through the quote form.
  2. 02 Feasibility We report what can be built, the risks and a first estimate of the bill of materials.
  3. 03 Build and test We build the proof of concept, then iterate prototypes from the test data.
  4. 04 Hand-off You receive the production hand-off package listed in your quote, or we manufacture it here.
Proof

Boards we took from design to a tested unit.

Our own Cricket board in KiCad, a panel of boards out of our reflow oven, and finished boards ready for test. We do these steps in one shop.

Our Cricket board in KiCad, top copper in red and bottom copper in blue, with vias, pads and silkscreen.
Design in KiCad
A soldered panel of our boards lifted out of the open reflow oven, gold heat shielding behind it.
Assembly on our own line
About twenty finished boards standing in two 3D-printed trays on our bench.

Questions

Before you ask

What does an R&D engagement include?

A project moves through a feasibility report with risks and a BOM estimate, proof-of-concept hardware and test results, prototype iterations and a production hand-off package. Each phase is scoped and quoted on its own.

Do you build the product as well as design it?

Yes. We assemble and test pilot runs on our own line, and the hand-off package lets your own manufacturer take over, or we manufacture it here.

What should I send to start?

A short description of what the product must do and who it is for, any sketches, parts or files you already have, and what a successful first unit looks like. Send it through the quote form.
